Part Two

They were always comfortable. If something went wrong, they’d find a way to fix it—easily. Ninety-nine percent of the time, they’d find someone to fix it for them.

Generally, however, things didn’t go wrong—not for them. They skated along, knowing the ice beneath them was thick. They had their money, they had their social standing, they had their tribe of well-to-do upper-class friends and relations, and they didn’t stray off the reservation. Except sometimes for “fun.” When a man would go visit a hooker or a woman would have a naughty afternoon with a plumber, or someone would decide to play a game of darts at the pub with the locals. They’d dally, but then they’d always go back to their own.

If you asked them, they’d say they were entirely free of prejudice. They’d forget all the little remarks they made to each other. The He’s not one of us or She’s not our class, dear—comments often shared over brandy or port. Port that had to be passed to the left down the table, not to the right. They lived in their bubble, and that bubble cared very much about which way to pass a bottle of port.

Because they took so much for granted, they didn’t pay attention. They were blind to possible threats, to all that comfort of theirs. Or, if they did sense any threats, they dismissed them. They didn’t understand that when there is an “us” there is a “them.” And that those thems might just be waiting their turn, biding their time, getting ready to take that bottle of port and smash it over those privileged heads.
